Bohinj Railway: Epic Train Journey Through the Mountains

The train ride from Jesenice to Nova Gorica along the Bohinj Railway is the most beautiful railway journey in Slovenia, and one of the most scenic in Europe and the world. In less than 90 kilometers, you cross the Julian Alps, travelling from the Alpine town of Jesenice to the Mediterranean atmosphere of Nova Gorica. Or the other way around.

Practical Info

  • Length: 89 kilometers
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Stations: 17

A journey on the Bohinj Railway is not your average train ride, it’s a unique experience through the heart of Slovenia. From dramatic mountain landscapes and breathtaking views to technical marvels from the early 20th century, this historic railway takes you back in time and past some of the country’s most stunning places.

Breathtaking Views Along the Way

During the ride, you pass straight through the Julian Alps, surrounded by green meadows, dense forests, and charming small villages. You’ll get views of iconic sights like Lake Bled and the crystal-clear Soča River. Whether you’re a nature lover, hiker, or photographer – the scenery from the train is an experience in itself.

A Technical Marvel of the 20th Century

What makes this railway extra special is its impressive infrastructure. The Bohinj Railway features no less than 28 tunnels (the longest over 6 kilometers!), 65 bridges, and 5 galleries. Its crown jewel is the stone arch bridge over the Soča River near Solkan – the largest stone railway bridge in the world.

The railway feels like a time capsule. It has not been modernized, it’s a single-track, non-electrified route, maintained with diesel trains from the 1970s. Small stations still have stationmasters, and you often buy your ticket directly from the conductor. Or book online via Slovenian Railways. You travel just like people did a century ago – and you can feel it in every detail.

Originally, the Bohinj Railway was part of the Transalpina line, opened in 1906 to connect České Budějovice (Czech Republic) with Trieste (Italy). The plan was grand, but history intervened. During World War I, it was vital for moving troops and supplies to the Soča Front. But shifting borders and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire changed its destiny. Since 2014, the link with Trieste is no longer in operation.

From the Alps to the Mediterranean

The railway connects the Alpine town of Jesenice with Nova Gorica on the Italian border. The highest point lies at 576 meters, the lowest around 100 meters. In just a few hours, you travel from fresh mountain air to the Mediterranean vibes of the west. A unique transition you won’t find anywhere else.

Practical Travel Information

There are seven trains per day in each direction on weekdays. Trains are usually quiet – except during holiday periods, when tourists also discover the route. It’s also ideal for hikers and cyclists. You can bring your bike on board: €1.50 for a regular bike, €3 for an e-bike.

To experience the full journey, board in Jesenice and ride all the way to Nova Gorica – that’s how you truly enjoy the Bohinj Railway in all its glory.

Also Great: The Car Train

Between Bohinjska Bistrica and Most na Soči, there’s also a car train. It lets drivers avoid the winding mountain road over the Soriška Planina. While this ride only covers part of the railway, it’s still a special adventure.

This route belongs on your bucket list, not just for the views, but for the sense of nostalgia and simplicity you’ll experience throughout the journey.
