The southeast of Slovenia offers diverse landscapes. Along the Kolpa River in the far south, you'll find family-friendly spots. The rest of the area is known for its peace and natural beauty.

Highlights include the town of Novo Mesto, the Kozjansko Nature Park, and the picturesque wine region of Bela Krajina, with charming towns like Črnomelj and Metlika.

Kolpa & Bela Krajina

The Kolpa River and its surroundings are the land of the Slovenian folk hero Peter Klepec, who is immortalized by a massive statue on its banks.

Peter Klepec, a shepherd boy from the village of Osilnica, received superpowers from a fairy. He used these powers to help others and drive away Turkish invaders. The legend of Peter Klepec is one of the most famous Slovenian folk tales, and near Osilnica, you’ll find a large statue of the young hero by the river.

In the southernmost part, the Kolpa River is a source of inspiration and recreation. With summer temperatures reaching up to 30°C, it’s a perfect place for a swim.

To reach this area, drive from Ljubljana to Novo Mesto, then head south via Črnomelj. The region is also accessible by train, with stations in Črnomelj and Metlika, and the last station in Rosalnice is within walking distance of the river.

Posavje & Kozjansko

The southeastern corner of Slovenia is the wine region of Posavje, a land that still carries the spirit of the knights, especially in and around Radeče in the north. Here stands the beautiful Rajhenburg Castle, and you'll also find the Kozjansko Nature Park.

The capital of the region is the small town of Krško, located along the Krka River. It's a charming and peaceful place with a few spas and water parks—an ideal spot to unwind. This is Posavje & Kozjansko.

Dolenjska

Dolenjska, connected by the Krka River, is a region known for its picturesque towns, vineyards, and castles. Novo Mesto, the heart of the region, is renowned for the production of Adria caravans and campers, as well as various Renault car models. Despite its industrial activity, Novo Mesto retains a charming, small-town atmosphere.

Along the Krka River, you can find Žužemberk Castle and the old tower of Soteska Castle, featuring frescoes by Flemish/Dutch painter Almanach. Downstream, Otočec Castle stands out, with its castle and spa resort, offering a serene escape.

It’s known for its significant automotive industry, particularly the manufacturing of caravans and vehicles like Renault cars. The town is surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards, contributing to its scenic beauty.

Dolenjska can be reached by following the highway south from Ljubljana (towards Novo Mesto, Zagreb). You can also reach the region by train, with connections to Novo Mesto and other towns in the area.
