High above the town of Celje, the Counts of Celje built a massive castle, and from here, they ruled over much of present-day Slovenia during the late Middle Ages. The Counts of Celje are legendary, especially because they were Slovenians ruling over Slovenian territory, which was rare in the country’s history.
