Odprta kuhna is Ljubljana's open-air kitchen: every sunny Friday from mid-March to the end of October, restaurants cook at Pogačarjev trg. Times, tips, and what to eat.
On Fridays, Ljubljana's kitchen moves outdoors. At Pogačarjev trg, between the Central Market and the cathedral, restaurants, bistros, and street food chefs set up their stalls and cook on the spot: Slovenian classics alongside Asian dishes and Balkan grills. You walk from stall to stall, grab a small portion at each, and find a spot on the steps or at one of the long tables. Admission is free, and the atmosphere is that of a city taking Friday afternoon off.
What to expect
- Every Friday from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, from mid-March to the end of October
- Dozens of restaurants and chefs from Ljubljana and the rest of the country, cooking on-site
- Štruklji and Karst prosciutto, as well as ramen, burgers, and Balkan grills; plus wine, beer, and dessert
- Small portions, so you can taste from multiple stalls
- No reservations, no table service: you eat at long tables, on the steps, or standing up
- In case of bad weather, it will be cancelled; this will be announced that same week on the organization's website and newsletter
Plan your city trip so you're in Ljubljana on a Friday, and go around lunchtime or early in the evening: it’s busy but manageable. Bring some cash, as it’s faster than card payments at a crowded stall.
