Martinovanje (St. Martin's Day)
On November 11th, must officially becomes wine, and Slovenia doesn't let that pass unnoticed.
About one in seven Slovenians works in viticulture, and with martinovanje cellars open up across the entire country. The festivities usually continue for a week or two around that date.
What to expect
- The symbolic baptism of the must, where the young wine is given a name and the season is brought to a close.
- Open cellars and tastings in Štajerska, Prlekija, Brda, the Vipava Valley, Dolenjska, the Kras, and Posavje.
- Roast goose or duck with mlinci and braised red cabbage, followed by pogača or potica.
- Large city celebrations in Maribor, Ptuj, Koper, and Ljubljana, and smaller ones at individual wineries.
The city festivals are the loud version. For the real experience, drive into the hills and let a winemaker pour you a glass.
