Dining Out in Slovenia: Restavracija or Gostilna?

In Slovenia, dining out is more than just having a meal, it’s a social ritual. Cafés and restaurants are full of life, buzzing with conversation, the clinking of glasses, and the aroma of freshly prepared local dishes. Slovenians love eating out, and when people meet, it often happens in a café, preferably with a good glass of wine or a strong espresso.

As you embark on your culinary journey, you’ll come across two significant terms: gostilna and restavracija. Both promise delicious food, but there’s a subtle difference. A gostilna is typically a traditional inn, where you’re welcomed as if joining a family meal. Think: homemade dishes, recipes passed down through generations, and a warm, rustic atmosphere. A restavracija is usually more refined, modern, and focused on gastronomy – sometimes with a creative twist or fine dining experience.

Whether you choose the warmth of a gostilna or the elegance of a restavracija – in Slovenia, you always taste the soul of the country. And that makes every meal unforgettable.

Relaxed Atmosphere & Traditional Dishes in a Gostilna

A gostilna is much more than a restaurant: it is the beating heart of Slovenian food culture. You’ll find a laid-back atmosphere, traditional dishes, and often surprisingly good pizzas. A full lunch rarely costs more than ten euros, especially between 11:00 and 16:00. If you want to experience authentic Slovenian cuisine, this is the place to be.

Gostilnas are usually open all day, from early morning to late evening, although some may close earlier on weekend evenings. You’ll find one in nearly every village, often family-run businesses with a warm, welcoming feel. And yes, you’re more than welcome to pop in just for a drink.

Around fifty gostilnas carry the Gostilna Slovenija quality label, meaning they serve pure Slovenian dishes made with seasonal and local ingredients. It doesn’t get more authentic than this.

Fine Dining & Creative Culinary Experiences in a Restavracija

For more exotic flavours and refined cuisine, a restavracija is the right place to go in Slovenia. Here, you’ll find kitchens from around the world, from Thai and Indian to Brazilian, or enjoy Slovenian haute cuisine with an elegant twist.

A restavracija usually opens in the afternoon or evening, because here it’s all about the food. Lunch and dinner are given equal attention, with dishes prepared with great care. Just want a drink? It’s better to visit a café or gostilna – a restavracija is all about the full dining experience.

Cafés in Slovenia: From Strong Coffee to Local Craft Beer

In Slovenia, cafés are the go-to spots for a good cup of coffee or a drink – but don’t expect an extensive menu. The Dutch-style eetcafé doesn’t really exist here; that role is fulfilled by the gostilna.

Coffee is generally better than in the Netherlands, and the drinks menu is quite comparable. A few years ago, beer lovers had to choose between Laško or Union, but those days are over. Like in the rest of Europe, local craft breweries are on the rise, and more and more cafés now serve Slovenian craft beer on tap.

If you’re into nightlife, take note: many cafés close early. In city centres, most shut their doors around 1 AM – even on weekends. Only a handful stay open longer.

Attention Burger Lovers: The Best Burgers in Slovenia

For years, Hot Horse, famous for its horse meat burgers, was the go-to burger joint in Slovenia, alongside the classic McDonald’s. But times have changed, and the burger scene has grown, especially in Ljubljana. Local favourites like Hood Burger and Lars & Sven now compete for the title of best burger in town.

Today, many cafés also serve burgers as a savoury snack, often with surprising toppings. And if you’re in Celje, don’t miss out on a unique local specialty: the pizza burger, a creative culinary mash-up that wins over both pizza and burger lovers. Imagine a juicy burger wrapped in a crispy pizza crust – the perfect choice if you can’t decide between the two.

It’s a bold Slovenian food creation that you simply have to try at least once.
