Martuljek Waterfalls: A Spectacular Hike near Kranjska Gora

Discover the spectacular Martuljek Waterfalls in Slovenia! An exhilarating 8 km hike with two stunning waterfalls, plus practical tips for families and adventure seekers.

What makes the Martuljek waterfalls so special?

Nestled in the heart of the Julian Alps, close to the picturesque village of Kranjska Gora, the Martuljek Waterfalls represent one of Slovenia's most spectacular hiking routes. This is not just another waterfall hike; it's a journey through some of the most diverse and breathtaking landscapes the region has to offer.

What makes this place truly special? It's the combination of elements. Here you'll find everything a perfect mountain day demands: a powerful gorge with sheer rock walls, two waterfalls of different scales and styles, dense forests, and views across the rugged peaks of the Martuljek mountain group. For nature lovers like Nina, who seeks authentic and sustainable travel experiences, this is paradise. For active families like Jan and Marloes, it offers the perfect blend of adventure and accessible routes.

The appeal of the Martuljek Waterfalls is timeless. As earlier visitors noted, the urge to return year after year is irresistible. This is a place where nature never stops impressing.

How to hike the Martuljek Waterfalls route?

The hike begins in the village of Gozd Martuljek and takes you through a variety of landscapes. Here is the step-by-step breakdown:

  • Phase 1: To the Spodnji (lower) waterfall (30-45 minuten)

From the parking area, you'll follow a well-marked trail ascending through the forest. The path is usually dry and relatively straightforward. After about half an hour, you'll reach the Spodnji (lower) waterfall, a stepped cascade approximately 60 meters high. The water descends in several tiers, creating a unique and mesmerizing spectacle.

  • Phase 2: To the upper waterfall via two options (1-1,5 uur)

From the Spodnje waterfall, you have two choices:

Option 1: Through the gorge (spectacular but seasonal)

This route takes you directly through the gorge with steep rock walls on both sides. It is spectacular, but this route can be seasonally closed due to weather damage or falling rocks. Check with locals before you go.

Option 2: Viate forest path (safer and usually open)

This route first leads you past an alpine meadow (where you'll find the Pri Ingotu restaurant during summer months), then ascends through dense forest to the upper waterfall. The trail is longer but less technical than the gorge route.

  • Phase 3: The Zgornji waterfall and the thrilling ascent

De Zgornji (upper) waterfall is the crowning jewel of this hike. This waterfall stands approximately 115 meters tall in total, with an impressive free fall of about 30 meters. To reach its base, you must climb through a rock cleft secured with steel pins and cables. This is a moment where adrenaline and natural beauty converge.

Warning: This section requires care and a reasonable level of climbing ability. It is not suitable for very young children without strong supervision.

How to reach the starting point?

Parking and directions

The trailhead is located in the village of Gozd Martuljek, situated between Kranjska Gora and Jesenice. This village is easily accessible by car and makes an ideal base for a day trip.

Navigation: Use GPS coordinates 46.4547°N, 14.1128°E or search "Gozd Martuljek" on Google Maps. Once in the village, park on the right side (when coming from Kranjska Gora) halfway through the village. There is a small parking area; informal roadside parking is also customary.

Distance tips: Gozd Martuljek is just 15 minutes drive from Kranjska Gora, making it perfect for a day trip from town.

Is this hike suitable for children?

Suitable for older children (12+):

If your children are at least 12 years old and have some hiking experience, this is a fantastic family outing. Stop after the lower waterfall if anyone seems tired. Many families find the first waterfall impressive enough on its own.

Caution with younger children:

For children under 12 years old, we recommend hiking to the lower waterfall and returning from there. The route to the upper waterfall and especially the climbing section through the rock cleft is too demanding for young children.

Family safety tips:

Bring sturdy hiking boots with good grip (paths can be wet and slippery). Pack plenty of water. The alpine meadow along the way is a perfect rest stop. Check the weather before you go; wet conditions make the gorge route even more hazardous.

Practical Information

Additional tips:

Bring plenty of water (at least 2 liters per person). The waterfall water is not drinkable. Pack snacks, though Pri Ingotu (open in summer) sits on the alpine meadow. Bring sunscreen; despite hiking through forest, open areas are intense. Wear sturdy hiking boots; the path can be very wet and slippery.
